"Can you move to Australia if you are over 50?" one would question, given the tight age limitations in place for most work visas.

The good news is that visas exist that allow persons beyond 50 to move to Australia. Of course, you must fulfill all of the conditions for the visa you wish to apply for.

We'll look at your choices for an Australian visa if you're over 50 years old in this article:

  • Business Innovation Stream (Provisional) Visa
  • Business Talent Visa
  • Global Talent Visa
  • Parent Visa

Business Innovation Stream (Provisional) Visa (subclass 188)

The subclass 188 visa is a temporary visa that lasts for four years. It is the initial step toward permanent residency as a temporary visa. Permanent residency is obtained through the Business Innovation and Investment Visa in this situation (subclass 888).

The criteria for the subclass 188 visa vary depending on the stream you apply for:

Business Innovation Stream: You want to start, grow, and manage a new or existing business in Australia. This stream is for you.

Investor stream: You desire to make a specific investment of at least AU$1.5 million in an Australian state or territory and continue doing business and investing in Australia.

Significant Investor Stream: You are ready to spend at least AU$5 million in compliant investments in Australia and continue to conduct business and invest in the country.

You must be under the age of 55 to apply for both the Business Innovation and Investor streams. That's not much older than 50, so if you're already 50, don't wait too long to apply!

Business Talent Visa (Subclass 132)

The subclass 132 visa permits you to start a new business in Australia or expand an existing one. It is divided into two streams:

Significant Business History stream: For high-caliber business owners or co-owners interested in doing business in Australia.

Venture Capital Entrepreneur stream (ACVAL): Those who have received venture capital investment from a member of the Australian Venture Capital Association Limited are eligible for it.

To apply for a category 132 visa, you must have a state nomination and be 55 years old or younger. If you satisfy specific criteria, states or territories may waive the age restriction.

Global Talent Visa

The Global Talent Visa's goal is to recruit the world's finest and brightest talent to help Australia's economy flourish. If you are highly talented in one of the following ten target sectors, you will be able to apply:

  • Resources
  • Agri-good and AgTech
  • Energy
  • Health Industries
  • Defense, Advanced Manufacturing and Space
  • Circular Economy
  • DigiTech
  • Infrastructure and Tourism
  • Financial Services and FinTech
  • Education

You must also be able to get a salary that meets the AUD153,600 high-income criteria. This statistic is updated every year on July 1st.

Parent Visas

Parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents, as well as Eligible New Zealand (ENZ) citizens, can apply for one of several Parent visas:

  • Parent visa (subclass 103): You must apply as a retiree.
  • Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa: You'll need an approved Parent Sponsor to apply.
  • Aged Parent visa (subclass 804): You must be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia.
  • Contributory Aged Parent visas (subclasses 864 and 884): You must be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia.
  • Contributory Parent visas (subclasses 143 and 173): You must apply as a retiree.

Other requirements for these visas include passing the family balance test and having a sponsor and completing health and character standards.
