Over 130,000 overseas students study at Canadian universities each year. In addition to a high-quality educational system, Canada provides a varied range of options and a vibrant culture.

But how difficult is it to secure a Canadian student visa, often known as a Canadian study permit? Knowing this will be crucial when it comes to choosing where you want to study. So, what are the prerequisites for acquiring a student visa in Canada, and how complicated is the process?

Let's discover together!

Apply to a Canadian institution and wait for an acceptance letter.

If you're still unsure about where to study in Canada, you'll need to decide before you can begin the application process for a student visa. You'll receive an acceptance letter after being admitted to a Canadian institution, which you'll need for your visa application.

Start your application for a student visa in Canada.

After receiving your university acceptance letter, it's time to move on to the following stage: applying for a student visa, sometimes known as a study permit locally.

The initial stages in acquiring a student visa are as follows:

  • Apply for your Canadian student visa on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website before arriving in Canada.
  • If you don't have access to the internet or submit the papers online, send the paperwork by mail.
  • An offer letter from a reputable educational institution is required (a university recognized by the Canadian government).
  • Demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to continue your studies in Canada (tuition fees and living expenses).
  • Show proof that you have never been convicted of a crime.
  • Submit clinical records stating that you are in excellent health, as well as any mandatory medical examinations.

After you finish your studies, the study permit will expire in 90 days(after you receive a notification of the program completion). You may still travel and explore Canada, or you can apply for a work visa, which will allow you to work full-time or part-time or even be self-employed.

Gather all of the necessary paperwork for obtaining a student visa in Canada.

  • Filled-in student permit application form.
  • The university's original letter of acceptance.
  • You must have a valid passport or travel document that permits you to return to your home country. This is not required if you live in the United States.
  • Two recent passport-size pictures, write your name and date of birth on the back.
  • Proof of funds during your studies. This entails demonstrating that you have between 10,000 and 11,000 CAD per year to live in Canada.
  • A letter of intent.
  • You must show proof that you have paid the study permit fee (150 CAD).
